Waddenfonds Supports pilot project

For natural gas-free heat solution

The CAIWO project (Compact Natural Gas-Free Integral Heat Solution) that we are implementing in collaboration with three companies receives a contribution of € 975,765 from the Wadden Fund. The total cost of the innovative project is € 1,684,927. The fund thus shows that the energy transition in the Wadden Sea region is high on the priority list.

The threat to this area by CO2 and other greenhouse gases is just one of many caused by harmful energy supplies. The natural gas damage in Groningen and the damage to the Wadden Sea area due to planned invasive interventions for wind and solar farms (which do not provide sufficient stable energy and will cause more energy infarctions) are just two examples of this.

According stichting Het. Kan Wel! and the three companies involved, it can be done, differently and we want to show that over the next year and a half with this pilot project.

The pilot project

The trial should show that it is possible to heat existing and new homes without natural gas in a fairly short time. The CAIWO will be further developed and tested at a number of test locations in the Wadden region and the three northern provinces. The system must be able to switch between different source systems, including solar panels, geothermal and aquathermal.

This trial involves twelve homes that will be heated without natural gas. For this purpose, an affordable, integral and practical (plug and play) system is being developed that will be installed in existing homes. The heat is generated with solar thermal energy, geothermal energy and/or a water ring pipe. Although the system is very suitable for individual homes, this project will mainly focus on collective applications.

The project works together with municipalities, housing cooperatives and energy cooperatives. At the end of the project, knowledge meetings will be organized to stimulate and accelerate the introduction of the system among installers, housing cooperatives, energy cooperatives and citizens. It is in our best interests that the use of natural gas for heating homes is reduced.

Results

The result should be a compact unit that can be installed in existing and new homes, for example in the meter cupboard or in the place where the central heating boiler is now located. The success of this project has major consequences for the Wadden area and especially for the province of Groningen. The operation of the system has already been demonstrated on a small scale. This project will further test and perfect the CAIWO system.

A test line will also be built for the assembly of the systems. The intention is to quickly scale up the production of this innovation after the project, so that as soon as possible many homes can be heated without natural gas.

Scaling up production looks at the possibility of producing locally, providing people who have little chance of a good job in the labor market and making the system as future-proof as possible by adapting raw materials.

Waddenfonds

The Waddenfonds was established to give a sustainable and qualitative boost to the ecology and economy of the Wadden Region. It does this with financial support for initiatives in the Wadden Sea region, which contribute to the achievement of their (main) goals. Entrepreneurs, foundations and associations as well as local authorities can submit a grant application for the implementation of a project. In addition, the Waddenfonds would like to see parties work together.

Grant applications can be submitted periodically. The Waddenfonds uses eight themes, which are opened up for certain periods. In addition, there is the Local Innovations Budget for small-scale projects. A so-called opening decision indicates which criteria a project must meet and in which period an application can be submitted. An opening decision will be published on the Waddenfonds website
